Protecting Rye’s historic heritage
for future generations

Membership Form

Rye Conservation Society exists to safeguard our historic town and to preserve its special and distinctive character.  Living or working in a Conservation Area of national significance places responsibility on all of us - residents and businesses alike. Modern life and environmental pressures require change; our challenge is to ensure this takes place sympathetically, in keeping with our rich architectural heritage.

Our Planning Committee meets every two weeks to review local planning applications and provide feedback on these to Rother District Council and to local councillors.  Follow local issues we are involved with and alert us to others by adding your comments on our new Blog.

Our Aims

The Shapes and Materials of Rye

Medieval buildings mix with Georgian houses, Victorian buildings, Dutch gabled properties and historic churches.  The blend of architectural styles is what makes Rye a unique place.  See Gallery for examples and information about the different shapes and materials of Rye.

2012 Townscape Awards: three winning projects

The Society looks for examples of good conservation and good modern design in the town and recognises them by giving those responsible a
Townscape Award.

Recent high-quality craftsmen’s work in Rye was recognised by the Society at its 2012 AGM. The winners of this year’s Townscape Awards were announced, with three projects winning prizes.  See Awards for details.
